ASA 105 Coastal Navigation Course in Alexandria, VA

Knowing how to navigate safely without relying solely on electronics builds both your confidence and capability as a skipper. This course empowers you to explore new cruising grounds, confidently plan multi-day routes, and handle the ever-changing conditions of coastal waters. By mastering these fundamental navigation skills, you’ll unlock the freedom to chart your own course, making each journey both safer and more adventurous. Teaches the foundational skills necessary for safe and effective passage planning and navigation in coastal waters.
You’ll learn to read and interpret nautical charts, use tide and current tables, and understand key navigation publications like the USCG Navigation Rules. The course covers plotting positions, correcting for current and leeway, and converting between true and magnetic bearings. Practical exercises include plotting dead reckoning positions, determining a course to steer, and taking bearings to find your location. By the end of the course, you’ll have the tools and knowledge to confidently plan and execute coastal passages with accuracy and safety.

This course has presentations, hands-on plotting, handouts, and homework, so please make sure you are well rested and ready to learn each day, especially on testing day.

- In-person classroom only; 3 half days with homework assigned; timed proctored exam on day 3

Disclaimers
Students in this course will master the essential navigation techniques for ASA 104. Although not a prerequisite to take ASA 104, we recommend completing it before you do.
What about cancellations due to weather?
This is an indoor classroom course and cancellations are rare, however, we will cancel if there is flooding blocking access to our office location, or for any reason that our ability to access the training rooms are prohibited. We will attempt to find a suitable alternative location nearby before cancelling.
