Heritage Sails is an American Sailing–affiliated sailing school based in Alexandria, Virginia, offering professional sailing instruction on the Potomac River and throughout the Chesapeake Bay.

Our name reflects both tradition and place. These historic and demanding waters have shaped generations of mariners, rewarding preparation, sound judgment, and good seamanship — the same qualities we emphasize in every course we teach. Our instruction blends time-tested seamanship with modern techniques, preparing sailors for real-world cruising and skippering.

Our programs follow a progressive training pathway, guiding students from foundational sailing skills through cruising, navigation, and advanced coastal sailing. For those seeking a fully private, outcome-driven experience, we also offer tailored instruction through our Executive Skipper Program.

We intentionally limit class sizes to ensure meaningful, hands-on learning. Our instructors are experienced sailors and professional educators with deep local knowledge of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. Students are supported, challenged, and expected to think and take responsibility — just as a skipper would underway.

Heritage Sails works with individuals, couples, and small groups who want more than a certificate. We teach sailors how to plan, decide, and sail with confidence in real conditions.
